Isurumuniya

Isurumuniya is an ancient Buddhist temple located in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. It is famous for its beautiful rock carvings, serene environment, and historical significance. The temple was built during the reign of King Devanampiya Tissa (247–207 BCE) and is considered one of the oldest Buddhist sites in the country.

One of the most famous attractions at Isurumuniya is the "Isurumuniya Lovers" rock carving, which depicts a romantic couple and is believed to represent a historical or mythical love story. Other notable carvings include the "Man and the Horse" and figures of elephants bathing in the nearby pond.

The temple is built into a rocky landscape, creating a unique blend of natural and man-made beauty. Visitors can explore the shrine room, admire ancient sculptures, and enjoy panoramic views of Anuradhapura from the rock summit. Isurumuniya remains an important pilgrimage site and a symbol of Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage.
